1 SS5H8b Key Events and People of the Civil Rights Movement

2 Brown v. Board of Education (1954) Was a Supreme Court decision that over turned the idea of “separate but equal” in schools This case set the stage for desegregation in public schools across the nation (school systems could no longer separate students based on race) The process to desegregate was slow, but began the process of the Civil Rights Movement

3 Rosa Parks Another area in which separation of the races was common was in public transportation In many places laws were in place that forbade people of color from sitting at the front of buses, and having to give up their seats to white passengers In 1955 Rosa Parks took a stand against these laws when she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus She was arrested for her actions

4 Montgomery Bus Boycott After Parks’ arrest, African-American churches and local civil rights leaders called for a boycott of the city’s buses The boycotts were met with violence which was broadcast on television In 1956, after more than a year long boycott, the Supreme Court ruled that transportation segregation was unconstitutional If you were part of the boycott, what are some ways that you could get to school, and your parents could get to work? What if your family didn’t own a car?
