The reason behind the progress of Islam Quran Etrat University Fall 2011 By Mariam Islam

The progress of Islam had been achieved because of the character of the holy Prophet (s.a.w) and the unique and miraculous Quran. Indeed no one can doubt the depth and power of such a Holy book. The prophet’s attitude, personality and leadership were qualities that made him succeed in his mission and become influential to others, especially to Imam Ali (a.s).

Prophet’s Attitude Islamic Principles Firm Personal Affairs Lenient The Holy Prophet (s.a.w) always handled his personal affairs with leniency and generosity. An example narrates that a man accused the prophet of owing him money and treated him harshly to the point where he would bruise him, the prophet responded with kindness and said that even if he didn’t owe him he would go to his house and pay him the money he wanted. However when it came to handling Islamic affairs that relied on its laws and principles he was firm and just and wasn’t flexible to anyone. One example narrates that a highly prestige woman violated an Islamic law by stealing and the prophet firmly stated she had to be punished no matter how much her family spoke of her stature and the how her family would be disgraced. His attitude resulted in the success of Islam as he attracted Muslims through his good character.

Examples of his kind personality includes:  Forgive those that insulted him  Gentle to those that acted fiercely towards him  Allow children to sit on his lap, regardless if they wet themselves.  Friendly toward those who were rude  Make jokes but not to the point of futility  Greet people with a smile

Prophet Muhammad’s (s.a.w) leadership qualities included being gentle, friendly and kind. He did not use his high status to show superiority, in fact he would act the opposite. For example he would consult others despite the fact that he didn’t have to in order to make others feel important and raise their morale. “It was by the mercy of Allah that thou most gentle with them (O Muhammad), for it thou hard been stern and fierce of heart they would have dispersed from around thee.” The Holy Quran (3:159)

Imam Ali would live by the prophet’s example as well. He would also put his personal relations aside when it came to making decisions of an Islamic nature. One account recalls him burning his own brothers hand to show that he doesn’t waver in such affairs regardless of the person’s family prestige. End of Presentation.
