3. The Aims The opportunity to deepen and broaden your knowledge of English and world literature, culture, and history by studying in one of the world’s great cities. The opportunity to study in small classes with full- time faculty known both for their scholarship and teaching. The opportunity to study abroad while spending less money that you would in programs funded by private universities (Penn, Arcadia, etc.).

4. The Instructors Steve Newman: established program in 2013; widely published in Eighteeenth-century and Romantic literature English and Scottish literature; CLA, Temple, and national teaching awards Srimati Mukherjee, multiple-award-winning teacher in the First Year Writing program and author of Women and Resistance in Contemporary Bengali Cinema: A Freedom Incomplete (Routledge 2016) and essays on film in journals such as The Quarterly Review of Film and Video and South Asian History and Culture.

The Courses English 0834 | Representing Race (3 credits) or English 0934 | Honors Representing Race (3 credits) Instructor: Steve Newman For Temple students, English 0834 and for Temple Honors students, English 0934 are GenEd Race and Diversity (GD) courses. Steve Newman English 0822 | Shakespeare at the Movies (3 credits) Instructor: Srimati Mukherjee For Temple students, English 0822 is a GenEd Arts (GA) course. Srimati Mukherjee English 2202 | Introduction to English Literature, 1660-1900 (3 credits): Fulfills a required survey for the English major and can also be used for the minor. Instructor: Steve Newman Steve Newman English 3711 | Intermediate Film (3 credits) or Film and Media Arts 3680 | Foreign Studies in FMA (3 credits): Fulfills one of the 3 3000-level electives required for the major. Instructor: Srimati MukherjeeSrimati Mukherjee Temple students who successfully complete (with a C- or better) credit-bearing coursework worth at least three semester hours in this program will satisfy the World Society (GG) requirement.

The Fieldtrips: A Sampling All: 3 Shakespeare plays, a 1660-1900 play tbd, daytrips to Oxford and Hampton Court Palace Shakespeare in the Movies: A tour of the Globe Theatre Representing Race: Slavery and the City Walk, Jewish London Walk, Museum of Immigration Intro to English Lit: William Blake Walk, Kew Botanical Gardens, a trial in London’s Central Criminal Court International Film: Tours of Camden Market and Brick Lane Optional: Lake District daytrip, theater and overnight stay in Oxford

7. Where We’ll Learn When Not on Fieldtrips: 17 Southampton Place, Bloomsbury

8. Lodgings and Neighborhood N. B. This remains to be determined, but we have some confidence that students will again stay in Blithehale Court in Bethnal Green in East London. The participants in 2015 loved the accommodations, which have private bedrooms and bathrooms and a shared kitchen/living room, as well as the neighborhood.
