Day One

1 25 Every Day per lb

You will have 15 minutes to work with your partner to help me solve my problem. Then you will have another 10 minutes to make a poster that shows your solution so that everyone else in the class can understand it. If you finish early, I will ask you to find your answer in a different way so take your time, check your work and make sure your poster is clear.

Day Two A

Yesterday, everyone worked on a problem that I had. What was it? Before we do anything more, we’re going to have a gallery walk. A gallery walk is where you go around and look at your teammate’s work. The gallery walk will help us learn about different strategies for solving the problem.

These are the rules of the gallery walk: 1.It is silent. 2.You will get some post-it’s. While you are walking around, you will write a note on a post-it about your teammate’s work. You will put the comment next to the poster. 3.You will have 10 min.

What are some things we might write as comments? I think your strategy is interesting. I’m trying to figure out why we have different answers. You explained your work really well. I can understand what you did. Your strategy is really great. What made you think of starting like that? Your way is so fast. I want to try that strategy next time. I don’t understand this step. I need more convincing.

Now it’s time to share! After people share we will ask: Who can explain the strategy they shared? How many other people did it this way? Was this strategy easier or harder than the others? How are the strategies related?

Day Two B

Before we go back to the big dinner, I want to do a little mental math. I am thinking about cars and tires. At an auto shop, you need to buy 4 tires for every car. Number of CarsNumber of Tires 14 28 416

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 3 x 4 6 x 4 12 x 4 14 x 4 13 x 4 16 x 4 7 x 4 8 x 4

Today you are going to work on a Constructed Response. Your job is to: 1.Read the problem several times. 2.Do whatever you need to do to find the answer – draw a picture, guess and check, do some math. 3.Write an explanation about how you got your answer. I will be walking around to see your work but I’m not going to help you. When we are done, I will choose a few people to talk about their process in front of the class.

It’s time for us to learn from our teammates. Listen very closely! I want you to tell me: How are their strategies the same? How are their strategies different?

Day Three A

Before we get back to the Turkey Dinner, you will have 10 minutes to read my feedback on your Constructed Response and rewrite your answer and explanation.

Back to our turkey! Wouldn’t it be helpful if the store posted charts to show what the different turkeys would cost? Let’s think about what that would look like.

Number of PoundsCost 1 2 4 $10 10 20 $1.25 $2.50 YOUR TURN!

Day Three B

Back to our turkey! Yesterday we tried to fill in a chart to show what the different turkeys would cost. Let’s talk about what you were thinking while you were working.

Number of PoundsCost 1 2 4 $10 10 20 $1.25 $2.50 YOUR TURN! Turn and talk: How might you figure out that cost of turkey that weighs 6 pounds? Turn and talk: How might you figure out that cost of turkey that weighs 19 pounds?

Just like yesterday we need to do a little mental math. This time we want to figure out how many juice boxes we can buy Number of PacksNumber of Juice Boxes 16 212

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 4 x 6 6 x 6 8 x 6 10 x 6 12 x 6 11 x 6 14 x 6

Day Four

Back to our dinner! The charts for the turkey were so great that we are going to do some charts for apples and carrots!

Number of PoundsCost 1 2 5 6 10 9 $1.60 $3.20 Number of PoundsCost 1 2 10 5 3 4 $1.10 $2.20 YOUR TURN!

Now that everyone has had time to work, we’re going to make posters of solutions. You do not need to recopy your chart because you can just tape it to your poster.

Day Five A

Yesterday, everyone worked on a problem that I had. What was it? Before we do anything more, we’re going to have a gallery walk. A gallery walk is where you go around and look at your teammate’s work. The gallery walk will help us learn about different strategies for solving the problem.

These are the rules of the gallery walk: 1.It is silent. 2.You will get some post-it’s. While you are walking around, you will write a note on a post-it about your teammate’s work. You will put the comment next to the poster. 3.You will have 15 min.

Day Five B

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 8 x 7 10 x 7 20 x 7 22 x 7 21 x 7 24 x 7 23 x 7

Day Six A

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 10 x 8 8 x 10 9 x 8 10 x 16 9 x 16 10 x 17 9 x 17 10 x 15 15 x 9 14 x 9 Let’s draw some groups to understand!

Today we are going to do one last chart! I saved this one for last because it is a hard one. Potatoes cost $0.99 per pound. We aren’t going to make big posters today but we are still going to share out.

Number of PoundsCost 1 2 3 5 10 9 $0.99

Day Six B

Before we get back to the Turkey Dinner, you will have 10 minutes to read my feedback on your Constructed Response and rewrite your answer and explanation.

Yesterday you worked on making a chart for potatoes that cost $0.99 per pound. I am going to have a few people share out and then we will compare their strategies.

Number of PoundsCost 1 2 3 5 10 9 $0.99

Day Seven A

Today we will start with a cooperative game. One person in our circle will choose a number 1 to 9. Then we will go around the circle with each person adding 9 to the previous total. I will record our results. What happens when we add the digits of each number?

Now let’s examine what happens when we skip-count to get the nine-times table.

Nine is a super interesting number! Do these nine patterns continue? What makes it so interesting?

Now that everyone has had time to work, we’re going to make posters of solutions.

Day Seven B

Yesterday we were investigating to see if a pattern continued and we wanted to explore how it worked. What pattern were we investigating? Time for a gallery walk!

Let’s share what pattern we noticed. THINK! How does this pattern help us understand the magic trick we saw at the beginning of class?

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 10 x 7 9 x 7 10 x 14 9 x 14 10 x 13 9 x 13 12 x 9

Day Eight

I have finally decided on my plan for the big dinner and this is what I’m going to buy: - the 24 pound turkey - 4 pounds of apples - 6 pounds of carrots - an 8 pound bag of potatoes How much is all of that going to cost?

Today we are just going to have a few people share out how they did a part of the overall problem.

Day Nine

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 6 x 4 12 x 4 12 x 2 2 x 24 4 x 12 8 x 6 16 x 4 6 x 7 3 x 14 18 x 4 Let’s use a number line to model our ideas.

Now I need to know how long to cook the turkey dinner. My cookbook said that it will take 15 minutes per pound. How long will I need to cook it?

Day Ten A

Yesterday you tried to figure out how long I need to cook my turkey. Now we’re going to make posters of solutions. Make sure that your poster is super clear so that someone else can understand your work.

These are the rules of the gallery walk: 1.It is silent. 2.You will get some post-it’s. While you are walking around, you will write a note on a post-it about your teammate’s work. You will put the comment next to the poster. 3.You will have 15 min.

Let’s listen to how a few people solved the problem.

Day Ten B

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 6 x 7 3 x 14 2 x 21 12 x 5 4 x 15 8 x 10 8 x 5 4 x 20 2 x 40 14 x 4 Let’s use a number line to model our ideas.

Day Eleven

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 9 x 7 7 x 9 8 x 7 9 x 14 8 x 14 10 x 15 9 x 15 10 x 13 13 x 9 12 x 9

Yesterday we heard some friends share out about how they solved the constructed response. Now you will have some time to redo the problem. Make it the very best that it can be. Then you can show it to a partner to see if they have any feedback.

Day Twelve

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 10 x 8 8 x 10 9 x 8 10 x 16 9 x 16 10 x 17 9 x 17 10 x 15 15 x 9 14 x 9

Solve the problem in your head. When you have the answer, give a hidden thumbs up. 6 x 8 3 x 16 2 x 24 9 x 6 3 x 18 8 x 12 8 x 6 4 x 24 2 x 48 17 x 4

Today you are going to work on a Constructed Response. Your job is to: 1.Read the problem several times. 2.Do whatever you need to do to find the answer – draw a picture, guess and check, do some math. 3.Write an explanation about how you got your answer. This Constructed Response is to show what you’ve learned over the last three weeks. It’s a little bit like a test. So I am not going to be walking around and we are not going to share out at the end.
