 Listen. This is listed first because it is the most important rule. In order to follow the directions you need to be listening when they are being given.  Get Clear. You need to be clear about directions before you can follow them. It is recommended that you ask any questions about the directions when the teacher is giving them. Do not wait until everyone has begun the activity to ask your question.  Stay Focused. If you would like to do something other than the activity given, please ask the teacher. Do not, once the activity has started, “create your own directions” on what you may do during that time.

 Pay Attention. We will know you are paying attention because you will be looking at the person talking when you are not taking notes. You also won’t be talking to any of the other class members. If you have a question, please ask the speaker instead of another member of the class.  Ask Questions. Asking appropriate questions that relate to the topic is not only respectful, but it is also an example of active learning. Asking the speaker helps them know you are listening. You will get more out of presentations if you ask good questions.  Take Notes. Taking notes helps because you may be asked a question or be given an assignment based on the activity. During the activity, your notes will help you. Assume all presentations are valuable and have a pen and notes out, don’t wait until something important is said to get your notes out and start writing.

 Don’t Touch. Don’t touch any of your classmates during class. This includes poking, pushing, and shoving. Even if you mean it to be playful or encouraging, it is not appropriate.  Don’t Throw. Nothing should ever be thrown in class. Things should be handed, passed, or placed.  Don’t Lend Without Permission. Please ask permission to lend a classmate any of your supplies. Each student is responsible to bring his or her own supplies.

 Do it. Have your homework assignments completed before coming to class.  Bring it. Bring all your class materials (books, paper, pens) to class everyday.  Read it. Many nights your homework will be to read sections of a book, article, or short story. Please have it read before class begins or you will not understand the presentation/activity.

 Be respectful. Negative comments and teasing make people feel uncomfortable. We are all entitled to our opinions and emotions. It is important that people feel comfortable expressing themselves in class.  Be encouraging. If someone gets an answer incorrect or seems to be missing the point of a presentation/activity encourage them to get on track.  Be helpful. If you are good at something someone else is not, please offer to help your classmate. Let the teacher know you want to help and a solution can be created.
