Enterprise stories investigate an issue and expand on it, often exposing details that were previously unknown. Reflection and Summary Reflection: What kind of stories would you consider enterprise news? Why would this still be appropriate for a news paper or magazine? Summary: Find an enterprise story through social media (phone) or online. Why would you consider this story enterprise news and not breaking news? Example http://www.bbc.com/news/video_and_audio/ The Chicago Tribune won the Pulitzer Prize for exposing faulty government regulations of toy and carseats. Their story ended up changing government policy.

Reflection and Summary Reflection: What types of stories make up breaking news? Why? Would you rather cover enterprise news or breaking news? Summary: Read a story online or in the paper. Summarize the story. Was this a breaking news story or enterprise story. Why or why not?

For example: Gainesville times might have a high school sports beat. Reflection and Summary Reflection: Think of some benefits to having a beat, versus covering different topics? Summary: Read a story online or in the paper. Summarize the story. Do you think this story was written by someone on a beat? Why or why not? Finally, how would that help the quality of the story?

What would be the positives or negatives of this position. Summary: Summarize a news story. Do you think this story was written by a general assignment reporter? Why or why not? Reporters who do not have a regular beat to cover. Editors assign general news and feature stories.

Depending on a reporters beat, they may choose to write on an athlete, a businessman, celebrity, politician, musician, etc. Reflection and Summary Reflection: What is the purpose of profile stories? What do they add to a paper, broadcast show or news magazine? Summary: Read a profile story. What kind of story was it? What was the appeal to you (audience).

Journalists get together to discuss trends and how they can be turned into stories, or used in stories. Reflection and Summary Reflection: Why are trends important to follow in news writing? Summary: Read an article that discussing a new trend (memes, fashion, newest obsessions etc.) How was this story relevant or interesting?

Summary: Summarize a news story. Discuss how the topic might pass a tipping point and how you would know that.

Each person shares their ideas for stories and offer their expertise and suggestions. Imagine what the pitching session might have been like for this story…what might have been discussed?

Impact – anything that affects the story and community Element of surprise – it should be new Conflict - problems interest your reader Relevance – how is it relevant to the audience Prominence - Why is it important Proximity – the more local the more newspaper worthy it is. Soft News: Feature stories and human interest stories are soft news. Articles that are informational, educational, emotional or entertaining are also soft news.
