Fun fun. Acid-Base Reactions

Acid-Base Neutralization  Acids and bases will react with each other to form water and a salt.  Water has a pH of 7—it is neutral (neither acidic nor basic)

Titration Calculations  Titration: determination of an unknown concentration of solution by the addition of a solution of known concentration.  Fact: If you add enough acid to a base, eventually the solution will be neutral… you will have as many moles of H + ions as you do OH - ions.  Fact: n = M · V

 For a solution in which an acid and base have reacted to neutralize each other…  If we know the concentration of one of the solutions, we can find the concentration of the other simply by measuring volumes!

 Q:But how do we know when the solution is neutral?  A:Using an indicator! indicator: a compound which will change color in solution at a given pH

Sample question  If 25 mL of 2.4 M HCl is required to neutralize 13 mL of NaOH, what is the concentration of the NaOH?

Sample question  What volume of 0.0034 M nitric acid is required to neutralize 1.00 L of 0.050 M LiOH?
