5.2 - Salts Salts are a class of ionic compounds formed when:  acids and bases react  oxides or carbonates react with acids  metals react with acids NaCl (table salt) is only one kind of salt  a salt is made up of a +ve ion (from a base) and -ve ion (from an acid)  Salts are found in many things  In batteries, explosives and fertilizers  In multivitamins  In many living cells

5.2 - Salts A salt is an ionic compound…  whose cation is an ion other than H +, and  whose anion is an ion other than OH -.

Acid-Base Neutralization Neutralization reactions occur when an acid and a base react to produce a salt and water acid + base  salt + water Ex. HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq)  NaCl (s) + H 2 O ( ) acid base salt water Identify the acid, base and salt. Balance the equation. Ex. Mg(OH) 2 + CH 3 COOH  Mg(CH 3 COO) 2 + H 2 O http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/ph/

Metal Oxides an oxide is a compound that combines at least one O atom / ion with at least 1 other element a metal oxide is a compound that contains a metal chemically combined with oxygen metal oxides react with water to form bases  Na 2 O (s) + H 2 O ( )  2 NaOH (aq) metal oxide + water  base Ex. Write a balanced equation for the reaction of calcium oxide and water. Name the product of this reaction.

Non-Metal Oxides a non-metal oxide is a compound that contains a non-metal chemically combined with oxygen non-metal oxides react with water to form acids  SO 2(g) + H 2 O ( )  H 2 SO 3(aq) non-metal oxide + water  acid

Non-Metal Oxides Ex. Write a balanced equation for the reaction of carbon dioxide and water. Name the product of this reaction.  non-metal oxides (ie. CO 2 ) are formed from the burning of fossil fuels  add water in the atmosphere = acid precipitation

Acids and Metals the most reactive metals, at the bottom of groups ___ and ___, react vigorously with…  water, and  acids all other metals are less reactive than the… When metals do react with acids, H 2 gas is usually released 2 HCl (aq) + Mg (s)  MgCl 2(s) + H 2(g) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfsFRBh2tys acid + metal  salt + hydrogen gas

Acids and Metals Ex. Write a balanced equation for the reaction of solid aluminum and sulphuric acid. Name the salt produced through this reaction. acid + metal  salt + hydrogen gas

Acids and Carbonates Carbonates (-CO 3 ) neutralize acids, protecting locations with natural carbonate supplies from acid precipitation.  ie. the CaCO 3 contained in rocks such as limestone and calcite dissolves in acid precipitation H 2 SO 4(aq) + CaCO 3(s)  CaSO 4(s) + H 2 O ( ) + CO 2(g) acid + carbonate  salt + H 2 O (l) + CO 2 (g)

Acids and Carbonates Ex. Write a balanced equation for the reaction of nitric acid and sodium carbonate. Name the salt produced through this reaction. acid + carbonate  salt + H 2 O (l) + CO 2 (g)
