State, county, and city health departments focus on disease prevention. Their functions include: Overseeing standards for water and sewage systems. Waste disposal. Sanitation of restaurants.

5 Lesson 4 Public Health Agencies Non-profit agencies have local chapters that are devoted to particular health concerns. In some communities, economics may have a negative impact on community health. Non-profit agencies may provide health-promotion services in these communities. Non-Profit Agencies

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administer federal insurance programs, which help provide health care to low-income and elderly Americans. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures the safety of food, drugs, and cosmetics. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) conduct medical research and provide funding for medical research carried out at other institutions. Department of Health and Human Services

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conduct research and collect data to help control the spread of diseases. 9 Lesson 4 Public Health Agencies Two key organizations that provide aid to countries in crisis are: World Health Organization (WHO): WHO has programs to eradicate diseases such as polio and cholera and to address pollution. International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC): ICRC provides emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters. Public Health on a Global Scale

10 Lesson 4 Advocacy—Taking Action for Public Health How Teens Can Advocate for Public Health Follow all health and safety laws and ordinances. Set an example by practicing healthful behaviors. Avoid actions that could endanger the health or safety of others. Get involved in events that promote public health. Find out which community groups deal with public health issues. Inform the proper authorities if you notice a condition or an activity that threatens public health.
