3 1. RIGHT TO SAFETY: products must not endanger consumers’ lives or health 2. RIGHT TO BE INFORMED: accurate information in ads, labels, and sales 3. RIGHT TO REDRESS: obtain fair remedies to consumer problems 4. RIGHT TO CONSUMER EDUCATION: sufficient info should be available to consumers (and you get to take this class!!!) 5. RIGHT TO CHOOSE: variety of goods and services are to be made available, no monopolies 6. RIGHT TO BE HEARD: Consumer interests when creating laws 7. RIGHT TO A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT: Businesses should contribute to the welfare of the community

4 USE PRODUCTS SAFELY: follow instructions for proper use and maintenance USE INFORMATION: use info to make decisions CHOSE CAREFULLY: consider options and make rational choices EXPRESS SATISFACTION/DISSATIFACTION: contact elected officers SEEK REDRESS: inform businesses of product defects and unfair practice BE AN EDUCATED CONSUMER: take advantage of info available CONTRIBUTE TO A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT: consumers should support buisnesses that operate responsibly

5 Get into 7 groups: Each group gets 1 right and 1 responsibility Try to come up with the most examples for each Then have 1 person present to the class, we will then discuss your findings.

6 In the same groups as yesterday, get together and discuss any instance when you were dissatisfied with a product and wanted to complain. Re-reading the section on the RIGHT TO REDRESS, go through the complaint process and describe how you would want the seller or manufacturer to correct the problem. WE WILL THEN DISCUSS YOUR IDEAS Be realistic!

11 CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION (CPSC): Develops voluntary industry standards Bans consumer products Recalls products Conducts research on potential products hazards Informs and educates consumers

12 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA): Protects human health Safeguards the natural environment Authority for air, water, and land Provides leadership in the nation’s environmental science, research, education, and assessment efforts

13 Companies promise that the product will meet specific standards, or they will repair, replace or refund. (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) FULL WARRANTY: covers the entire product, and will repair or replace the product within a specificed time period LIMITED WARRANTY: does not cover the entire product, has a specific time period, and has many limitations. IMPLIED WARRANTY: non written warranty that is assumed with the purchase of the product

15 HOMEWORK: Go through State and Local newspapers in search for an article about consumer issues that are relevant to our community. After you find a good article that you can use, Describe the differing view-points, and what YOU believe should be done to resolve this consumer issue. Write me a 1 page report on your findings!
