2011-02-01E. Hazen -- Upgrade Meetings1 AMC13 Project Development Status E. Hazen, S.X. Wu - Boston University

2011-02-01E. Hazen -- Upgrade Meetings2 Introduction AMC13 specs agreed by most interested parties As detailed in MicroTCA WG document Design Overview Management functions Open issues Status and plans

2011-02-01E. Hazen -- Upgrade Meetings3 Spartan 6 Virtex 6 GTX SFP GTX SFP GTX SFP GTX IO SFP? CDS 128 Mbyte DDR3 GTP MMC uC Flash IO TTC DAQ GbE Spare IPMI GbE JTAG LEDs MCH1 Front Panel via T3 Fabric A £ 3.125 GB/s Fabric B 80 MB/s CLK F/O 40.xx CLK To AMCs AMC13 Block Diagram (Evolving)

2010-10-27E. Hazen -- Upgrade Week4 AMC Board Stack T1 T2 T3 T4 New custom T1 base board MMC functions (as AMC-13) TTC optical rx 3 or 4x SFP Cross-over GbE from MCH1 for controls and local DAQ Clocks board Clock / controls fanout T3 board Provides JTAG / LEDs on front panel Crosspoint switch for trigger applications (could be omitted if some other solution is found for front panel) Base configuration has only tongues 1, 2 Base board - With optics and HS links (Fabric A) Clocks board - distributes LHC clock and controls Mezzanine connector for T3 with IPMI T3 has JTAG and LEDs Connector to T3 provides: Power Serial bus (SPI or I2C) from MMC Front-panel signals: JTAG or SPI for miniUSB Status LEDs

2011-02-01E. Hazen -- Upgrade Meetings5 Management Functions MMC: Minimal requirements. Prefer Atmel AVR. No space for mezzanine card  Power control; bootstrap selection for FPGA firmware Firmware: Initial bootstrap via JTAG on front panel  Loads firmware for Spartan-6 with simple GbE endpoint  Could also be done over IPMI if speed is sufficient Further firmware loads over GbE via MCH1 Select simple firmware via IPMI when required

2011-02-01E. Hazen -- Upgrade Meetings6 Hardware Issues – Tentatively Settled DAQ Interface Should we switch to SFP+ now? Yes... quad SFP+ is used on GLIB and should fit OK. Keep GTX SERDES. If 10Gb/s is needed, future upgrade (before 2017) TTC Interface Various ideas for upgrade on the table; none is directly compatible with current hardware. Keep current home- brew TTCrx and provide spare SFP+ for upgrades. MMC 0n AMC13. Will adopt a reference design, likely either DESY/CPPM/CERN or Wisconsin, based on Atmel uC.

2011-02-01E. Hazen -- Upgrade Meetings7 Status and Plans Design Underway Most issues regarding interface with rest of CMS settled... need to be sure we are all set with the uHTR First prototype hardware could be ready by May 2011 and there are at least two non-hcal users ready to start testing boards (Imperial College, Wisconsin)  Likely to be funding limited :( Firmware Development Many options here... depends on users  BU is committed to developing HCAL firmware  Trigger users may well develop their own... this is fine
