Art of the Pacific Islands

What type of Art did they produce? The people of the South Pacific produced art that was similar to the art of North and South American Indians. They made pottery, sculpture, weavings, and tools.

Island Life Much of the art of the South Pacific Islands represents their appreciation of nature. The art is also influenced by the region in which they live. Island life is dominated by the ocean and the art represents that.

Pottery The pottery of the Islands was hand built. It was used for cooking and storing food. The pottery was also very decorated with designs and colors.

Weaving The Pacific Island people used weaving to create baskets, clothing, and other functional art. They used wood, reed, vines, palm leaves and other nature fibers.

Sculpture The sculpture of the Pacific is very stylized. The artist depict gods, animals and people in simplified forms.

Woodworking Woodworking can be found in many of the previous categories. The Island people sculpted, weaved and made boats from wood. They also made homes and furniture. Wood was also used to make ceremonial art work such as bowls, masks and war clubs.
