4 Greece City-state = a central city (or polis) and the surrounding villages.  Have the same Laws Government Language Religion Culture

5 Government Oligarchy = a few (wealthy) people rule.  “ruled by few” in Greek Tyrant = a single person who took over Democracy = “rule by the people”

6 Athens & Sparta 2 main city states in Ancient Greece  Athens & Sparta

7 Athens Athens = one of the largest & most important city-states of ancient Greece. Had an early democracy (600’s BC) Only free adult males whose fathers had also been citizens could vote  Women /slaves/ foreigners couldn’t

8 Sparta Important city-state in the south of Greece. Athens’ chief rival. Ruled by an oligarchy. Military society.  all boys received training from age 7 - 30
