Primary learning improvement www.leedsforlearning.co.uk Governors training May 2016 Key terms The Characteristics of Effective Learning EY curriculum Assessment and statutory assessment 2016 EY Data

What are the Characteristics of Effective Learning?

Learning and development 7 areas of learning 17 ELGs

Each area of learning and development must be implemented through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults. Statutory Framework for the EYFS 2012 DfE

EYFS Assessment – helps to… “ recognise children’s progress, understand their needs, and to plan activities and support.” Statutory Framework for EYFS 2012 “Observational assessment … is the most reliable way of building an accurate picture of children’s development and learning, especially where the attainment demonstrated is not dependent on overt adult support. (It is) key to understanding what children really know and can do.” EYFS Handbook 2013

Primary learning improvement www.leedsforlearning.co.uk So how are assessments made? Observations are levelled using Development Matters over time and used to plan next steps in children’s learning (formative assessment) Judgements are collated, reviewed, and summarised half termly using ‘best fit’ (summative assessment) End of year judgements are made in relation to the 17 Early Learning Goals (ELGs)

Primary learning improvement www.leedsforlearning.co.uk EYFS Profile – this is still statutory in 2016 Robust on entry judgements will need to be made across all 17 aspects so that these can be reported at the end of the year and progress measured in each aspect over time

Primary learning improvement www.leedsforlearning.co.uk Leeds EYFSP data comparisons 2013-15 20132014Increase2015Increase Good level of development Leeds 51%58%7%62%4% Good level of development National 52%60%8%66%6% Average total point score Leeds 31.5 points 33 points 1.5 points 33.60.6 Average total point score National 32.8 points 33.8 points 1 point 34.30.5 EYFSP 2015

Three measures in EYFS GLD – Good level of development A child can reach a GLD if they score 2 or more in every one of the first 12 areas of learning ie they achieve at least the ELG for these 12 strands. ATPS – Average Total Point Score This is the total score each child achieves (ie the total score for each of the ELGs) divided by the number in the cohort Children scoring 2 for all aspects, i.e. expected across all aspects.

Maintain low % of children achieving 17 points Reduce the number of children in bottom 20% (27 points or fewer) Narrow/close the gender gap Improve performance of vulnerable groups PP/EAL So what are the challenges for Leeds in 2016?

Which schools made the most difference? What did they do? Analyse data – specific actions Focus on language development Monitor progress – take action Access training, visit other schools, share best practice, cluster work

Questions ……..…………and Comments What’s that? I can see… (describe) I think… (share ideas) How many are there? What colour is it ? I wonder..... (express curiosity) Oooooo.... (social oil) He might… (speculate) Let’s think what to try... (discuss trategies) So you think that … (clarify) I’d really like to know about this… (be a learner)

5-finger rule comment question comment Limit questions, and use comments

Primary learning improvement www.leedsforlearning.co.uk Can the EY Leader answer the questions………… How have you altered and enhanced provision in response to data findings at the end of Aut 1? How have you altered planning in response to this data? What are the strengths of your team? How are you planning for CPD?
