5 BULLYING “ A student is being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more students” (Olweus, 2001, p. 6)

6 What are the types of bullying? Physical abuse Verbal Ridicule Shunning of other students perceived as vulnerable, submissive, or different Cyberbullying: "Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies such as e-mail, cell phone and pager text messages, instant messaging, defamatory personal Web sites, and defamatory online personal polling Web sites, to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others." -Bill Belsey http://www.cyberbullying.ca/Bill Belsey

7 What are the negative effects of children who are bullied? *interferes with ability to reach full potential *causes intellectual and physical harm *associated with emotional and psychiatric symptoms (ex. Depression) *poor school attendance/school avoidance *increased risks of suicide
