2 Immagration in St Louis ● The St. Louis Metro has approximately 126,500 immigrants, and immigrants comprise 4.5% of the region’s population. ● Other metros in the top 20 average four to five times the number of foreign-born residents. ● The region’s relative scarcity of immigrants largely explains our poor economic growth, and the St. Louis metro’s fall from the 10th largest MSA in 1970 in the U.S. to 18th in population and 20th in economic output in 2010.

3 Impact of Immigration on St Louis ●The City's population in 1910 climbed to 687,029, retaining the position of St. Louis as the fourth largest city in the United States. ● Increasing inflows of immigrants to St. Louis would markedly lower housing vacancies and boost housing prices ●The foreign-born in St. Louis have higher labor force participation rates, and substantially lower unemployment rates than native-born in the region

4 The 1920s ●St. Louis was big in the automobile industry during the 20s. The increasing popularity of the automobile caused congestion in the downtown area at that time. St. Louis was actually home to the nations first gasoline station and the first car accident ●During the 20s, St. Louis had a period of extensive building construction of mostly new apartment and hotel buildings ○ The Fox theatre was built during this period

5 St Louis 1903-1915 ●One of the City's great moments came in 1904, when it hosted a World's Fair: the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in Forest Park and the city's western edge. ●1904 was the 100 year annaversity of the Louisiana purchase ●In 1908 the City constructed the first free highway bridge across the Mississippi River and in 1909, St. Louis celebrated the centennial of its incorporation as a town ●Started making roads.

6 Events in St Louis 1903-1915 ●The 1904 Summer Olympics were held in St Louis at the Francis field and the games lasted for five days ●This was the third ever Summer Olympics games hosted ●To start, if you were considered to be a minority, you had to compete in separate games. ●Boxing, freestyle wrestling, decathlon and a dumbbells event all made their debut in during the games
