ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 16 Unit 1 ALARA Issues Removed high dose components firstRemoved high dose components first Temporary shieldingTemporary shielding –Greater loading than operating units –Simpler approval process Airborne contaminationAirborne contamination –Reduced beta/gamma component, relative increase in alpha emitters

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 17 Major Projects and Exposure Totals

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 18 Radiation Exposure Summary

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 19 Typical materials for a decommissioning project:

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 20 LLRW Shipments to date

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 21 Large Component Removal Reactor Pressure VesselReactor Pressure Vessel –Reactor Pressure Vessel Head Three Steam GeneratorsThree Steam Generators PressurizerPressurizer –S/G and PZR by rail –RPV Head by truck –RPV shipment delayed indefinitely

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 22 RPV out of Sphere

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 23 Steam Generator Removal

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 24 Reactor Vessel Head Lift

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 25 Disposal of Large Components

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 26   We know what to do with the Class A and Class B/C waste. None of the waste is unique to decommissioning.   We know how to handle GTCC and Spent Fuel, and what to do with large components.   The new issue is dispositioning the very large volume of potentially clean material.   High cost of surveying, decontaminating materials   No standards for the clearance of potentially contaminated volumetric materials   Routine ALARA programs are adequate for decommissioning, with minor modifications

ISOE-Europe 3/25/04 27 Return to 1964 - “Forward to the Past”
