Determine Your Own Future

2 Randy Vagnini Program Lead Senior Energy Engineer Conservation & Load Management The Connecticut Light & Power Company “Give Your Small Business the Energy Advantage”

3 Energy Expo and Forum Today’s Agenda Small Business Energy Advantage –What is the CEEF? –SBEA Overview –Qualifying for 0% financing –Types of energy saving measures –Case Study: Marandino Foods –Low-Cost & No-Cost Tips –Q&A

4 Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) What it is, and how it works Created in 1998 by the Connecticut State Legislature Energy Efficiency Programs are funded by a $0.003/kWh surcharge on electric customers Energy Efficiency Programs are administered by the state’s electric utilities (CL&P and UI)

5 Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund innovative, energy-saving, award-winning programs for Connecticut customers CEEF energy experts give technical advice to: Large Commercial & Industrial Customers Small Businesses Municipalities Residents State Buildings

6 Small Business Energy Advantage (SBEA) CEEF Small Business Program offers: Turnkey energy-saving services –Financial Resources –In-house expertise Cost-effective energy savings –Low out-of-pocket investment –Quick Payback

7 How SBEA works Contractor and pricing (fixed) selected by competitive bid process Contractor will conduct a no-cost energy assessment of facility –Determine potential energy saving actions and measures CL&P and contractor prepare details of proposed measures, estimated energy savings and complete cost. SBEA uses financial incentives to offset project’s cost

8 How to Qualify for SBEA 1.An existing commercial or industrial customer with an average 12-month peak demand between 10 to 200 kW (150 UI territory) 2.A municipal/governmental agency facility that meets the above criteria To qualify, a small business must be:

9 SBEA Financial Incentives  Up to 40% of installed cost of lighting measures (effective 8/06/09)  Up to 50% of installed cost of LED and Induction lighting measures (effective 8/06/09)  Up to 40% of installed cost of non-lighting measures (effective 1/1/09)  Comprehensive Initiative  2 or more measures with the 2 nd measure being at least 15% of the total energy savings  Incentive based on the lesser of the following: 1. Up to 50% of installed cost 2. Buy-down to a 2 year payback 3. Energy savings up to.50/kWh + $700/kW

10 SBEA Financing Options 0% Interest loans for Commercial and Industrial SBEA Customers through CEEF/CL&P 0% Interest loans for Municipal Customers through CEEF/CL&P 36 Month Maximum Loan Term Good credit history with CL&P

11 Typical SBEA Energy Efficiency Measures Energy Efficient Lighting –High-performance lighting –Occupancy Sensors –Photocells

12 Lighting Examples Replace existing lighting… T-12 magnetic ballasts  Metal halides or High Pressure Sodium  Incandescent  Fluorescent lighting  (in refrigeration cases) Incandescent exit signs  with energy efficient lighting High Performance or Reduced Wattage T8 Electronic Ballasts High Performance T5 or T8 system, LED and Induction lighting technologies Hard Wired CFL’s and Specialty CFL’s LED strips LED exit signs

13 Typical SBEA Energy Efficiency Measures Energy-Efficient Refrigeration –Anti-condensation door heater controls –Electronically commutated motors –Evaporator fan controls –Night covers

14 Typical SBEA Energy Efficiency Measures Energy Efficient HVAC –Programmable Thermostats –Equipment Upgrades (Cool Choice Prescriptive Rebate Form)

15 Gas Efficiency Programs Offered to firm gas customers of Yankee Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Southern Connecticut Gas Incentives offered for energy efficiency measures that reduce natural gas usage Programs modeled after Energy Opportunities, Energy Conscious Blueprint and Operations & Maintenance Services A Letter of Agreement (LOA) must be executed prior to installation of energy efficiency measures

16 Typical SBEA Energy Efficiency Measures Energy Management Systems –Existing system upgrades –System replacement –New installations –Incentive Based on Lesser of: –40% of installed cost –$500 per point (total system points) –Avoided energy cost over 1 year

17 Marandino Foods Case Study & Success Story Achieve a lifetime savings of over 3,721,000 kilowatt-hours Offset the cost of investment with a $56,979 incentive Save approximately $32,000 and 289,655 kilowatt-hours annually CEEF and CL&P helped Maradino Foods Average payback time: 2.18 years

18 Marandino Foods Case Study & Success Story 170,900 gallons of oil not burned or, 4,449,037 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions avoided or, 2,078,989 pounds of coal not burned or, 443 homes provided with electricity for one year or, 388 cars taken off the roads. The electricity saved on this project over the lifetime of the measures is the equivalent of approximately:

19 No-Cost or Low-Cost Energy-Saving Options Quick ways you can start saving energy today! –General Lighting tips Develop a lighting protocol for staff to follow –Heating and Air Conditioning tips Keep your equipment clean –Refrigeration & Water Heating Systems tips Repair leaky hot water faucets promptly –www.energystar.gov Even small changes in a small business can make a BIG impact!
