INTRODUCTION Beam is structural member subjected to transverse load. It’s length is large in comparison with its cross section. Beams are used in residential buildings, multi-storey building, industrial buildings, bridges etc. loads from slab, floor, wall, etc. transferred to column through beam. Due to loading on beam reactions developed at the supports.

TYPES OF BEAM 1. SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM 2. OVERHANGING BEAM 3. CANTILEVER BEAM

4.FIXED BEAM 5.CONTINUOUS BEAM 6.PROPPED BEAM

TYPES OF LOAD (1) POINT LOAD OR CONCENTRATED LOAD  The load concentrated at one point is called point load.  Unit of point load is N or Kn. e.g. 20kN, 100 N. ( 2) UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED LOAD

 Load uniformly distributed on certain length of a beam is called uniformly distributed load.  It is written as u.d.l  It is shown by w.  Unit of u.d.l is kN/m or N/m. (3 ) UNIFORMLY VARYING LOAD  This types of load gradually increase or decrease on the length of the beam.  It is also called triangular load

TYPES OF SUPPORTS (1) SIMPLE SUPPORT  In this types of supports, beam is simply supported on the support.  there is no connection between beam and support.  at this type of supports, only vertical action will be produced.

(2) HINGED SUPPORTS  Beam and support are connected by a hinged.  beam can rotate about the hinge.  reactions may be vertical, horizontal or inclined. (3) ROLLER SUPPORTS  In this type of support, rollers are placed below beam and beam can slide over the roller.  reaction will be perpendicular to the surface on which rollers are supported.  this type of supports normally provided at the end of a beam.

(4) FIXED SUPPORT  Beam is completely fixed at end in the wall or support.  Beam can not rotate at end.  Reaction may be vertical, horizontal, inclined and moment.
