nwlpp NWLs role in resolving sewer flooding

nwlpp NWLs role in resolving sewer flooding £81m invested 2005-2010 758 properties removed from at risk 1060 properties funded 2010-2015 Design criteria 1 in 30 return Cost/benefit analysis

nwlpp NWL strategy Our Strategic Direction Statement published in 2007 sets out our aims for the next 25 years and beyond. “Significant investment likely to be required to deal with climate change, particularly to manage the risk of flooding caused by surface water from more intense rainfall”

nwlpp NWL strategy Waste Water ServicesIntermediate GoalLong Term Aspiration Strategic, long term sewerage planProduce a plan by 2013 in liaison with the EA, local authorities and other stakeholders Maintain a strategic, long term sewerage plan Properties experiencing internal sewer flooding Significant reductionReduce to zero Properties experiencing external sewer flooding Significant reductionReduce to as near zero as possible Pollution incidentsReduce to less than 50 by 2015Reduce to zero Sewage litter in water coursesContinue to address litter from sewer overflows Stop sewage litter entering water courses Meeting standards for discharges from sewage treatment works Zero breaches of consent standards by 2015 Zero breaches of consent standards River water qualityContribute to further worthwhile improvements to river water quality Bathing water qualityContribute to all bathing waters in the north east being classified as good or excellent

nwlpp NWL strategy

nwlpp Surface water management – a proactive approach

nwlpp FOG Working together reducing blockages

nwlpp History to date December 15 th 2008 – Draft Floods and Water Bill outlining the Council’s Responsibility. April 2009 - Benn/Healey Letter to Chief Executives – Strategic Flood Risk Assessments (SFRA) and the register of Critical Assets (the how are we doing letter) July 2009 – ANEC Meeting

nwlpp Other Progress to date The Environment Agency have written to ANEC (Association of North East Councils) recommending that 4 sub regional flood groups be set up, namely: Northumberland Tyne and Wear Durham Tees Valley (already had 3 meetings) The 4 chairs form a regional steering group, with EA and NWL (possibly Homes and Communities Agency too ) and agree Data Sharing Protocol etc.

nwlpp Some final thoughts Data sharing – how do we do this? Knowledge sharing – where is expertise? Limited uptake of SUDs – can this change? Pressure for housing conflicting with flooding risk Fats Oil & Grease – reduce blockages Urban Creep Working together – NWL as a Key Stakeholder From dry to wet in 17 minutes

nwlpp Thank You Questions?
