11 Mothers Day is now observed throughout the world honouring mothers and their contributions. Though it is an American invention, It has a deep rooted history.

12 Its history can be traced to the ancient era when the Greeks paid tribute to ‘Rhea’ the mother of gods.

13 Also during the 17 th century, ‘Mothering Sunday’ was celebrated in England on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Julia Ward Howe, an American, came out with an idea of Mother’s Day in 1872.

14 It was Anna Jarvis who started a campaign making ‘ Mother’s Day ‘ a public holiday in the USA.

15 She was successful in 1914 when president Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day as a national holiday to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

16 Today the Mother’s Day is observed around the countries of the world on the second Sunday of May. But some countries celebrate the day on the fourth Sunday of Lent like the UK.

17 The day awards us an opportunity to honour mothers by spending time together and by sending cards and gifts.
