2 A PERSONAL VOICE – PATTILLO HIGGINS “ Captain Lucas,... these experts come and tell you this or that can’t happen because it has never happened before. You believe there is oil here,... and I think you are right. I know there is oil here in greater quantities than man has ever found before.” —quoted in Spindletop Spindletop Oil Field In 1901 Pattillo Higgins discovered huge quantities of oil in Beaumont, Texas. He changed the world with that discovery, with cheap energy.

3 Titusville 1859 Bessemer Process Brooklyn Bridge 1883 Just as the whaling industry was failing Edwin l. Drake figured out how to use a steam engine to drill for oil at Titusville, Pennsylvania. After the Civil War a rapidly industrializing nation would depend on this new product for energy and lubrication. The steel industry saw advances with the Bessemer Process. This meant better steel for railroad tracks and also for new and amazing technologies like skyscrapers and bridges. The Brooklyn Bridge, shown above, was a modern marvel that connected Manhattan to the rest of New York City's boroughs. Commerce grew and real estate began to be thought of in vertical terms.

5 Sholes EdisonBell The second half of the 19 th century saw many inventions we use today. In 1880 Thomas Edison invented a working incandescent light bulb. Soon afterward George Westinghouse developed Alternating Current (AC), which put the lights in homes. Christopher Sholes invented the QWERTY typewriter in 1867; computer keyboards are modeled after his invention. And Alexander Graham Bell was looking for a way to amplify sound for hearing impaired people when he figured out that the hearing aid could be made into a two-way process; thus the telephone was born.
