Sound BY VERONIKA PUMPUTYTE

Diegetic and Non Diegetic Sound Diegetic Sound Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film: ◦ voices of characters ◦ sounds made by objects in the story ◦ music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music) Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world. Diegetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame. Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound. Non Diegetic Sound Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action: ◦ narrator's commentary ◦ sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect ◦ mood music Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space. The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening. We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are represented as coming from outside the space of the story events. A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy). Another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_4hOY-9nKAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_4hOY-9nKA This video that I have found explains the diegetic and non diegetic sound is excellent as it shows examples from films and also explains well on what sounds are diegetic and what are non diegetic.

Off Screen Sound Sound that is part of a scene but originating from a source outside of the visible frame. Off screen sound is diegetic sound that is heard by the actors in the same scene but not the same frame. For example two people are having a conversation but instead of the camera framing them both in the same shot they are being filmed with a single shot where you cannot see one of the people but can still hear what they are saying whilst watching the other persons reaction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkZDafmUMFg This video that I have found is a perfect example it shows the boy putting the song on and dancing to it yet we cannot see where the music comes from but the actors can definitely hear the music as the boy was dancing to it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkZDafmUMFg

Voice-over 1a: The voice of an unseen narrator speaking (as in a motion picture or television commercial) 1b: The voice of a visible character (as in a motion picture) expressing unspoken thoughts 2: A recording of a voice-over. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGKqV36sQ3Qhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGKqV36sQ3Q This trailer is a perfect example of a voice-over as you cannot actually see the person that is talking about what is happening in the film as he is not in it but his voice was recorded separately and was put over the film scenes.

Thought voice – Interior monologue Internal monologue, also known as inner voice, internal speech, or verbal stream of consciousness is thinking in words. It also refers to the semi-constant internal monologue some people have with themselves at a conscious or semi-conscious level. Much of what people consciously report "thinking about" may be thought of as an internal monologue, a conversation with oneself. Some of this can be considered as speech rehearsal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGpdlYIl51Mhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGpdlYIl51M This video is a perfect example of thought voice as the people in the video are not actually talking but the audience can hear what they are thinking.

Ambient Sound Ambient Sound is background sounds that are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc. Ambient sound is very important in video and film work. It performs a number of functions including: Providing audio continuity between shots. Preventing an unnatural silence when no other sound is present. Establishing or reinforcing the mood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsJz2TJAPjwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsJz2TJAPjw this video is a perfect example of Ambient sound as we can hear the cars driving.

SFX, Special Sound Effects Sound effects (or audio effects) are artificially created or enhanced sounds, or sound processes used to emphasize artistic or other content. In motion picture and television production, a sound effect is a sound recorded and presented to make a specific storytelling or creative point without the use of dialogue or music. In professional motion picture and television production, dialogue, music, and sound effects recordings are treated as separate elements. Dialogue and music recordings are never referred to as sound effects, even though the processes applied to such as reverberation or flanging effects, often are called "sound effects“. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX_iASz1Si8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX_iASz1Si8 this is a perfect example of special sound effects as the audience knows that the little planes are not actually real even known they are making a very realistic sound of a flying plane it is not actually happening.
