Today’s Sermon: Mark 14:32-52, “The Agony And Arrest Of Jesus In Gethsemane” by Pastor Jim Bomkamp

Outline of today’s msg: 1. Jesus will begin to enter into the depth of suffering that going to the cross entailed, and we will tread upon holy ground. 2. We will consider what Jesus’ suffering consisted of, why He suffered, and what was most difficult for Him. 3. We will discuss more about Judas and his peculiar treachery in betraying Jesus. 4. We will discuss what caused the disciples to flee from Jesus. 5. We will discuss Who it was that was really in control this morning.

Mark 14:32-36: Jesus takes His disciples to Gethsemane and is in agony there

What was it that caused Jesus the amount of agony that He experienced on this day?

What was Jesus referring to when He speaks of the “cup” that He was to drink?

What was Jesus referring to as “the hour” He wished to pass from Him?

In the book of Hebrews, the author writes about the depth of emotion of which Jesus often prayed during His life on earth: Hebrews 5:7

What Jesus suffered, He suffered alone

Two emphatic statements: “not what I will” “but what You will”

Mark 14:37-38: Jesus returns and finds the disciples sleeping, and He tells them to keep watching and praying so that they don’t enter into temptation

Mark 14:39-40: Jesus goes a second time to pray and then returns to find the disciples again sleeping

Mark 14:41a: Jesus goes and prays a third time and then returns and the disciples are sleeping yet again

Mark 14:41b-45: Jesus gets the disciples up to go out to those coming to arrest Him, and Judas betrays Him with a kiss

Mark 14:46-47: One of the disciples takes a sword and cuts off the ear of a slave

John’s gospel tells us how Jesus was in control on this morning when the soldiers came to arrest Him: John 18:3-8

Jesus’ last healing: Luke 22:51

Was it cowardess that caused the disciples to flee from Christ?

The Bible Exposition Commentary tells us about how Peter failed as we often do by using the wrong weapons for our warfare…

Mark 14:48-49: Jesus asks those who were arresting Him why they were treating Him like a murderer now while He had been teaching in the temple all week

Jesus did not retaliate against Judas or the mob came to arrest Him

Jesus says these things were happening to Him “to fulfill the Scriptures”: 1. Jesus’ betrayal was prophesied by the Psalmist: Psalm 41:9 2. The betrayal for 30 pieces of silver was prophesied in Zechariah 11:12-13 3. Isaiah wrote about what the Messiah would endure in dying for our sins: Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Mark 14:50-52: Jesus is taken and a young man runs away naked

CONCLUSIONS: 1. We need to learn from Jesus’ success and see Him as our example in trusting and obeying the Lord. 2. We need to learn from the disciples’ failure and watch and pray that we not enter into temptation. 3. Recognize what Jesus was doing on this morning He was doing because He loved you and was planning to die on the cross in your place and for your sins.
