Español Ab Initio Revision & Exam Tips

Paper 1 Read over the questions FIRST to know what you should be looking for in the text. You often do not have to understand everything written in the text. This is an especially good strategy if the text is very long! Don’t be intimidated if the text looks long or difficult! Know what key things you need to know by reading the questions first; then focus on those key things while reading the text. Read the questions carefully and understand the task. Know the rubrics! Avoid spending too much time on one question. Skip it and go back when you have completed the section. Often you will know the answer after you have answered the rest of the questions! Don’t worry about understanding every word. Skim and get the big picture/main idea. Use strategies by looking at the title, pictures, captions, and know the main point /purpose. Who is it written for? This will help you make an educated guess. LOOK FOR COGNATES!

Paper 1 continued If you are asked to look for synonyms. For example: a noun feminine plural look for the same: noun feminine plural preterite tense find preterite three words generally (but not always) search for three words expression as well If you find you are writing too long an idea, check for the main idea that gives the answer to the question and underline it so you don’t lose the point for writing too much.

Paper 2 What is my message? How will I answer/approach this task? Is my message clear, detailed and organized? What are my supports, examples, reasons? What is the appropriate format? Who is my audience? What language is appropriate to this context? What writing form matches this task? How can I apply new vocabulary and grammar into this context? What advanced vocabulary, transitions and expressions are best? How can I include advanced grammar, a variety of verb tenses and vary my sentence structure?

Paper 2 Understand the rubric! Put a check over each item you have answered to make sure you have answered all that is required. Answer more than you are required. Organize your text in paragraphs and use conjunctions. Count words and write word count at bottom. Proof read what you have written looking to fix common errors with noun/adjective agreement, subject/verb agreement, verb tense, ser/estar, por/para, etc…

GENERAL Use our Quizlet class to revise vocab! Refer to websites on MFL Weebly site to review and practise vocab & grammar! Memorise the language needed for certain text types. Practice written answers at home Plan your answers! DON’T PANIC!
