2 Fantasy Is known for having literary elements that are not realistic. For example: Animals that can talk Mythical beings Magic powers

3 Realistic Fantasy Is full of fantasy elements but reads like realistic fiction. Includes items like characters in school doing every day things (but still involving magic).

4 Historical Fiction Is known for being partially based on a real event in history. These novels cover a specific period in time other than the present or future.

5 Action Adventure This genre involves fast paced adventures or quests. Can involve the supernatural but not required.

6 Is any type of novel that contains one or more of the following: Solving a strange event or circumstance Discovering the truth behind something unknown Solving a crime or wrongdoing Spies Mystery

7 Happens during modern times (when it was written) and has characters that experiences events that really could happen Realistic Fiction

8 Is usually set in space or on a different world. These novels frequently take place in the future in a different universe or dimension. Science Fiction

9 A popular type of science fiction that is set in the future. The main characters are young adults who rise against an oppressive government. Dystopian Fiction

10 This large category consists of often short stories used to convey life lessons through characters and events. Examples include: Little Red Riding Hood, Zeus, and Paul Bunyan Traditional Literature

11 Uses rhyme, free verse, meter, and other such literary devices to tell a story. Poetry books can be stand alone poems combined into one book or novels in verse where the poems come together to tell a story. Poetry

12 Books about the lives of historical or contemporary figures. Biography-told by someone else (doesn’t normally know the person) Autobiography-told by the individual Memoir-written by some who knows the person closely more like diary Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir

13 Sometimes simply called non-fiction. These books give you facts about a topic that are true. In the numbered section of the library. Informational
