2 22 Third Sector Leadership Incorporates:- Mobilising others Getting things done, willingly, through other people Empowering others Articulating vision and embodying values Creating an environment in which things can be achieved Shaping and sharing a vision which gives point to the work of others.

3 33 Third Sector Leadership Typical competencies:- Research suggests an unusually broad range of competencies compared to public or private leaders “ As workers within the sector tend to be either low paid or voluntary staff, visionary leadership and inspiration are likely to be important aspects of the role regardless of size.” (Passionate Leadership, ACEVO, 2003)

4 44 Third Sector Leadership Leadership deficit because need extraordinary balance of:- Strong leadership and participative approach Ambitious for the cause and driven to survive Inward looking and outward looking skills Play different roles and adapt different leadership styles Exceptional communication and networking skills Resilience and responsiveness Emotional intelligence. Good to Great? “Social sector leaders are not less decisive than business leaders as a general rule; they only appear that way to those who fail to grasp the complex governance and diffuse power structures common to social sectors” (Jim Collins, 2005)

5 55 Third Sector Leadership Importance of Followers:- “one should not underestimate the role of “followers” (colleagues, subordinates or team members) in developing effective leaders…The success of most leaders is determined in part by the resources, energy, expertise and knowledge that such “followers” can muster”.
