Vocabulary Power Point Guidelines

Step 1: Title Slide Include a title slide in your presentation.  Title Slide:  Name  Grade Level  Content  Unit and/or topic

Step 2: Thematic Background Choose a thematic background.  Thematic Background:  Choose a background that compliments your concept theme  The background should enhance the presentation without overpowering the concepts being taught.

Step 3: Key Terms Labeled. Choose a concept and identify 12-16 key terms to pre-teach it.  Key Terms:  One term defined per slide.  12-16 terms in total.  Key terms should be sequentially ordered to explain the concepts.

Step 4: Definitions Define your key terms.  Definitions:  Written for an ELL at the proficiency level of Speech Emergence.  Defined within the context of the lesson concept  Simplified and bulleted to demonstrate the key points

Step 5: Images Select an image or several to represent the key term as it applies to the context of concept taught.  Image(s):  Represents the term in context  Uses one or many images to clearly define the key terms  May use arrows to clarify and clearly define all words within the definition.

NOTE:  If a definition includes language that has not been pre-taught then, use a preceding slide or two to explain it.  And, if you choose to include the term in a sentence, use an additional slide to demonstrate how to use with a visual.

Non-Example: The key term – “recycling” should be in the title box. There should be a picture or several to contextualize the definition.

Example: The key term – “recycling” is in the title box. The teacher can use the pictures to define the definition.

Vocabulary Builder Graphic Organizer: Creating a Vocabulary Builder is not required for the assignment.  The Vocabulary Builder Graphic Organizer is a note-taking strategy.  The students copy the definitions while teacher presents the Vocabulary.  This allows for the teacher to contextualize the definitions by using the images to help contextualize the key terms. The teacher can also give more examples orally to provide background knowledge.

Vocabulary Builder: Beginner/Intermediate  Have students complete the Vocabulary Builder:  Write the word 3 times,  Draw or cut and paste a picture  Copy the definition from the power point  Write the word in a sentence.

Vocabulary Builder: Intermediate/Advanced  Have students complete the Vocabulary Builder:  Write the word 3 times,  Write three synonyms  Copy the definition from the power point  Write the word in a sentence.
