9 H. O. R. S. E. Happy Organized Ready Students Everyday This year your students will be given a very special HORSE. They are to bring their HORSE to school each day and take it home each night. The HORSE is a tool to help your child learn the important skill of organization and will be a daily communication device between home and school.

10 Daily Planner/Behavior Log Each morning students fill out their Daily Planner with the day’s assignments. At the end of the day, the students will check off the work they finished. They will circle (H) for any work that is not finished. (See HORSE) They will take any unfinished work home with their HORSE to be finished. Students will fill in their behavior color. Parents need to initial each day.

11 Class Work Students are given time in class to work on their daily assignments. Any unfinished work will be sent home with the HORSE as homework. The homework is to be finished at home and returned with the HORSE the next day.

12 Homework Spelling each night using Speller’s Choice. Do assignments in journal. Speller’s Choice Math (from student’s math class) Reading Log - 20 minutes daily Unfinished class work

13 Curriculum Language Arts – Houghton Mifflin Math – Houghton Mifflin Science – FOSS Social Studies – Scott Foresman (California Standards Based)

14 Grades are based on… How well your child meets the California State Standards Standard scale used. i.e. 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, etc. His/her performance on: - Class work - District Assessments - Class Tests Homework (is an effort grade)

15 Assessments Reading Inventories: Mid/End of year V.I.P. Weekly Tests: Spelling, Grammar, Comprehension, Vocabulary Quarterly Language Arts Tests (District Assessments) Key Math Standards Tests: (given after each skill has been taught) Math Quizzes/Chapter Tests/Fact tests State Testing in Spring

16 Special Reminders Students need to wait at the lunch benches – before school each day (not by classrooms) Volunteer Sign-up Earthquake packs/First Day Packets Birthdays Holiday parties sign-up Bookmark and note to students Movie permission slip

18 Ways to Help Your Child Read! Read! Read! (ask why and how questions for comprehension) Practice math facts (0-18: +/-) daily for 10 minutes (especially -) Review Red words and spelling rules daily Keep a daily journal or diary and encourage correct sentence structure. Reinforce good printing skills. Read! Read! Read!
