Ms. Allen 2015-16 World History I

 Fossil remains from 1.7 million years ago.  “Peking man”  Chinese Settlements began before Sumerian  About 7000-5000 BCE  Cities developed around 2000 B.C.E.  Compare that to other river valley civilizations!

 Huang He (Yellow) and Yangtze River  Yangtze = “Yellow”  Yellowish silt, called “loess”  Disastrous floods  Difficult for trade (geographic isolation the cause of this)  Not complete protection with natural boundaries  ONLY 10% of land is suitable for farming

 Spirits of family ancestors had the power to bring good fortune or disaster  Polytheistic  Supreme god: Shang Di  Lesser gods  Oracle Bones

 Writing: characters that stood for a syllable or unit of language.  No links between written and spoken language (could read Chinese and not be able to speak a word).  All parts of China had the same writing system, but spoken language could be different (vernacular dialects) Also: Iron metallurgy used to create farming tools, utensils, and weapons

 Mandate of Heaven  Shang Di and other gods (Heaven) would bless the rule of a just ruler  If a ruler was unjust – Heaven then withdraw its blessing of the ruler’s reign, leading to the ruler’s overthrow  Dynasties/dynastic cycle  Development of bureaucracy  Govt. system in which important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives.

New dynasty established Period of prosperity Decline, corruption, disasters Dynasty loses mandate of heaven New family claims Mandate of Heaven New dynasty comes to power with support of the people and the Mandate of Heaven. The new dynasty experiences a period of prosperity and peace. The dynasty ages and becomes corrupt, raises taxes and oppression. Possibly natural disasters occur. As a result of these events, the dynasty is seen to have lost the Mandate of Heaven. Revolution becomes justified, and a new family claims to have received the Mandate and fights the old dynasty.

 Shang Dynasty: 1700 B.C.E. to 1027 B.C.E.  Zhou Dynasty: 1027 to 256 B.C.E.  Justified Conquest with the “Mandate of Heaven”

 1700 B.C.E. to 1027 B.C.E.  First family of Chinese to leave written records.  Important city: Anyang  Built of wood  Surrounded city with massive earthen walls for protection. (Intellectual advancement!!!)

 Roads and canals  Coined money  Blast furnaces to produce cast iron

 Agricultural economy  Rice, soybeans  Domesticate dogs, pigs, etc.  Built roads to stimulate trade  Geography hurts trade  Trade = stifled because of geographic isolation  Coined Money

 Loyalty: To Family (elders) and Ruler  Family:  Most important virtue: respect ones parents.  Patriarchal society  Women: Inferior  Social Class Structure: Feudalism 1. King 2. Ruling Class: Warrior Nobles 3. Peasants

 Zhou capital sacked and monarch murdered by nomads from the north.  Love of order, harmony, and respect for authority was replaced with chaos, arrogance, and defiance.
