“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” --Margaret Fuller Family Literacy

Overview Family Literacy currently oversees four local programs, all of which target different aspects of literacy. You can choose to work with children, adults, or English-language learners.

Project Read Population: Adult Perks: National organization that looks great on a resume! Close by, flexible meeting times. Process: You will be matched with a student and you will meet twice a week for 1.5 hours at a time. They desire a six-month commitment and you must be 18 years old. – You’ll need to attend one orientation meeting. (The next ones are: Sept 6 @ 12:15 pm, Sept 14 @ 5:15 pm, Sept 22 @ 7:15 pm.) Place: Walking distance from campus!

Selnate International School Population: ESL students Perks: Very flexible, close by, and a great chance to get creative! Process: You will be matched one-on- one with a student. You decide together what to focus on – perhaps you will study for the TOEFL, work on grammar, or do cultural activities. – Meetings must be after 4:10 pm, but you set your own times after that. Place: Walking distance from campus!

Orem Literacy Center Population: Children! Perks: You can make a significant difference in the life of a child. Also, the center is quite accessible. Process: You will be matched with a student. You meet twice a week for one hour at a time between 2:15 and 5:15 on Tuesday and Thursdays. Place: The Literacy Center is located right next to a bus stop. We also work to arrange carpools!

Rippy Literacy Center Population: Children, including some ESL kids. – While our primary focus is literacy, the Rippy center also has a need for math tutors. We would be happy to assist anyone who prefers this option. Perks: Very high needs center where you will be extremely appreciated. They volunteers who can’t commit to a specific schedule and are more than willing to create the experience that you are looking for. Process: – If you can offer a consistent time, you will be matched with a student. Regular tutoring hours are M-Th 9-1. – If you cannot offer a consistent time, your help is still needed! They will never turn down a volunteer, so this is a good match for someone with an unpredictable schedule. – ESL tutors are needed on T-Th evenings, however, you must make a weekly commitment for this option. Place: The Rippy Center is located in Lehi, at the public library. We will work with you to try and arrange a carpool.
