1 POSTER TEMPLATES BY: www.POSTERPRESENTATIONS.com Creating Valuable Health Education Opportunities for Domestic Violence Survivors Antoinette Moore; Courtney Roy; Patti Pagels, MPAS, PA-C; Nora Gimpel, MD; Dara Thomas, LVN Introduction Health Care in Dallas Workshop Let’s Talk About Sex Workshop Results Discussion Methods Designated as Quality Improvement by IRB Bimonthly workshops Contact Conclusions This project, as part of an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, aimed to develop and investigate the efficacy of two health education workshops designed specifically to meet the perceived needs of domestic violence (DV) survivors living in emergency shelter at The Family Place (TFP), the largest provider of DV services in Dallas, Texas. Evaluate workshops Use pilot data to revise Implement sustainability Create workshops addressing gaps One hour length New audience each week Identify Key Gaps in Health Education* Sexual Health Access to Health Care * Review of the literature and correspondence with national DV organizations did not yield any previously done workshops in these areas to duplicate. Emphasis placed on casual atmosphere with questions welcome at any time Simple pre and post surveys developed focusing on knowledge gained in key areas Project as pilot of health education offered by UT Southwestern med students/residents Problem: Overuse of the Emergency Room for primary care Workshop: Introduce concept of a medical home Goal: Outline insurance and assistance options available to each client, individualized to their situation Problem: Lack of awareness regarding insurance mandate Workshop: Discussed tax fees, exemptions, and special enrollment Goal: Disclose options specific to DV survivors and encourage enrollment in insurance Included information on communicating effectively with the doctor and organizing medical records Problem: DV associated with higher rates of STDs Workshop: Sex education as empowerment tool Goal: Emphasize sexual health in a sex- positive, open environment and teach adult women about their bodies Problem: Discussing sexual health with doctor and partner(s) Workshop: Phrases to use and knowing when to get tested Goal: Encourage disclosure of sexual health concerns with physician and partner(s) Included male condom demonstration on anatomical model, female condom demonstration, and free condoms Scores of seven question pre and post surveys were analyzed in SPSS via paired T- test at 95% CI. Surveys asked about confidence regarding level of knowledge, perceptions, and abilities in key areas. Despite small sample size, significance was found in every area except one (Let’s Talk About Sex: comfort in talking to sexual partner about STD testing) For this pilot project, survey scope was intentionally small, limiting breadth of information but yielding promising results For access to PowerPoints and materials developed, email Antoinette.Moore@utsouthwestern.eduAntoinette.Moore@utsouthwestern.edu For information about the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, visit schweitzerfellowship.org Special thanks to The Family Place staff and clients.
