Evaluate workshops Use pilot data to revise Implement sustainability Create workshops addressing gaps One hour length New audience each week Identify Key Gaps in Health Education* Sexual Health Access to Health Care * Review of the literature and correspondence with national DV organizations did not yield any previously done workshops in these areas to duplicate. Emphasis placed on casual atmosphere with questions welcome at any time Simple pre and post surveys developed focusing on knowledge gained in key areas Project as pilot of health education offered by UT Southwestern med students/residents Problem: Overuse of the Emergency Room for primary care Workshop: Introduce concept of a medical home Goal: Outline insurance and assistance options available to each client, individualized to their situation Problem: Lack of awareness regarding insurance mandate Workshop: Discussed tax fees, exemptions, and special enrollment Goal: Disclose options specific to DV survivors and encourage enrollment in insurance Included information on communicating effectively with the doctor and organizing medical records Problem: DV associated with higher rates of STDs Workshop: Sex education as empowerment tool Goal: Emphasize sexual health in a sex- positive, open environment and teach adult women about their bodies Problem: Discussing sexual health with doctor and partner(s) Workshop: Phrases to use and knowing when to get tested Goal: Encourage disclosure of sexual health concerns with physician and partner(s) Included male condom demonstration on anatomical model, female condom demonstration, and free condoms Scores of seven question pre and post surveys were analyzed in SPSS via paired T- test at 95% CI. Surveys asked about confidence regarding level of knowledge, perceptions, and abilities in key areas. Their stories are available at familyplace.org Medical student-developed one hour workshops are an effective way to provide important information to DV survivors living in emergency shelter Sustainability of such projects can be handed over to Family Medicine residents Residents benefit from partnership developed between agency and student as well as predeveloped materials Agency benefits from continuation of program for their clients Further work with DV survivors expanding these educational topics and developing widely available curricula is an area of need
