1 UNIT 4 Genetic engineering Biology and Geology 4. Secondary Education. GENETIC ENGINEERING AND THE SCIENTIFIC POLICE

2 UNIT 4 Genetic engineering and the scientific police Biology and Geology 4. Secondary Education. Genetic engineering is a very useful tool for the forensic police. Thanks to techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing, events such as thefts, and other crimes like kidnapping can be cleared up; even subjects such as inheritance can be resolved through paternity tests. Introduction

3 UNIT 4 Genetic engineering and the scientific police Biology and Geology 4. Secondary Education. Imagine that there has been a burglary in an establishment. The police arrive at the crime scene, they carry out a visual inspection and they find evidence which DNA can be extracted from, with blood, hair, skin and so on. Example The following step is to analyse the samples in the lab.

4 UNIT 4 Genetic engineering and the scientific police Biology and Geology 4. Secondary Education. DNA extraction (where necessary). Quantification (to see if there is sufficient sample). Carrying out PCR (to obtain more copies of the fragments of DNA extracted). Purification of the products of PCR (to obtain clean fragments). Sequencing of the DNA fragments extracted. Compilation of a genetic profile. Comparison with databases. Issuing a report with probability of agreement. Work in the laboratory Test tubes for PCR samples. DNA sequencing. Genetic profile.
