TU/e OPAC dr. Emrah Demir The link between Logistics and Public Transport Planning: Learning from Experience of Freight Industry

Logistics/Operations Management Logistics embodies the effort to deliver:  the right product  in the right quantity  in the right condition  to the right place  at the right time  for the right customer  at the right cost  with the right language Logistics Planning ? Strategic > 1 year (mode selection) Tactical < 1 year (equipment leasing) Operational – frequently on hourly or daily basis (dispatching) Transportation involves the physical movement or flow of goods.

Seamless Freight Transportation Definition: — where goods flow rapidly from door to door using the most cost-efficient and reliable transport modes in harmony with each other. efficient safe flexible environmentally sound

Goods at shippers Freight forwarder warehouse Air terminal plane air Freight forwarder warehouse Goods at consignees Container terminal vessel sea Change transportation modes truck land railway land barge mid-stream pier bulk goods sea Intermodal Freight Transportation Definition: The carriage of goods by at least two different modes of transport. Improvement of intermodal freight transportation plays an important role in achieving “seamless” transportation. In other words, the transportation of goods by different modes is done so efficiently that the changes in mode are hardly noticeable.

The Transportation Chain in Seamless Freight Transportation PDP: Pickup Decoupling Point CDDP: Customer Delivery Decoupling Point Vehicle Routing Problem

TU/e Smart Logistics Lab Research – Seamless Transport The model involves: – Multiple vehicle types (e.g. capacity) – Multiple depots – Scheduled fixed line services – Deterministic travel and service times – Time windows (requests) – Transshipment to/from vehicles/fixed line at transfer points only

Similarities between Seamless Freight and Public Transport Changing Customer Requirements Benefit of Information-Communications Technologies The need of focus on Management, Coordination, and Integration of Infrastructure Seamless Freight Transportation Seamless Public Transport OR based Models (Tools)

Learning from Freight Transportation TEAM SPIRIT An insider says, "We help each other, wherever we are. This makes work easier and more enjoyable.“ The POWER of TECHNOLOGY An insider describes the innovative technology as "awesome," adding, "There are so many cutting-edge tools being developed every day to enhance tracking performance that it's a great challenge to be working with them.“ INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Jobs in IT involve database management, the development and maintenance of warehouse systems, and supply chain management. LOGISTICS Jobs in logistics generally require an university degree; some positions require an MBA.
