3 GUARDING A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES  Open/Rec swim usually involves patrons of various swimming abilities and ages.  Challenges you may face include:  Young children who are not adequately supervised.  Patrons engaging in risky behavior in and out of the water.  A child who has wandered away from parents  Non-swimmers who venture into deep water  Patrons who suffer sudden illnesses

4 GUARDING A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES  Organized Activities  Questions that need answering for guarding organized activities:  What could go wrong that is unique to this activity?  What is the swimming ability and comfort level of this activity?  Are there unique obstacles that could get in the way of activating your EAP?  Do participants have medical conditions that could increase the risk of a sudden illness?

5 GUARDING A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES  Instructional Classes  Managers should consider instructors and coaches part of the safety team.  Instructors and coaches are responsible for the safety of their classes and teams but this does not mean you are exempt from duty.  You’re still expected to perform your duties and help with emergencies.  What are some risks of water exercise class with older adults?  What are unique risks of swimming lessons?

6 GUARDING A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES  Competitive Aquatic Sports  Most are skilled swimmers but are not exempt from danger.  Lists some risks for swimmers in competitive sports:
