Health-Related Fitness Physical Fitness - a set of abilities individuals possess to perform specific types of physical activity. There are 2 general categories. 1. health-related fitness 2. sports-related fitness

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness We have already mentioned how health status is affected by genetic predisposition and lifestyle behaviors. One of the key factors in preventing the development of chronic disease is maintaining a healthful body weight and composition.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Health-Related Fitness includes: ●healthy body composition and body weight ●cardiovascular-respiratory fitness ●muscular strength ●flexibility

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Health-Related fitness may also include markers and measurement such as: ●blood pressure ●bone strength ●postural control and balance ●lipid and carbohydrate metabolism

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Physical Activity - involves any body movement caused by muscular contraction that results in the use of energy. There are 2 basic types. 1. Unstructured - daily life activities 2. Structured - planned activities designed to improve physical fitness ie. EXERCISE

Health-Related Fitness What are the basic principles of exercise training? Principles of: ●overload ●progression ●specificity ●recuperation

Health-Related Fitness ●individuality ●reversibility ●overuse

Exercise and Health Related Fitness Principle of Overload This principle represents intensity, duration, and frequency. A running program for CV fitness could involve training at an intensity of 70% of maximal heart rate, a duration of 30 minutes and a frequency of 5 times/week.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Principle of Progression This is an extension of overload. As your body adapts to overload, the overload must be increased if more benefits are desired. You may start lifting 30 pounds, but as you get stronger, you may start lifting 35 pounds. This continues until the desired goal is reached.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Principle of Specificity - Running and weight- lifting make different changes in the body. Exercise training programs may be designed for certain sports-performance benefits. Research at least 2 sports-performance programs. Write a paragraph about what you found.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Principle of Recuperation An important part of exercise training, recuperation is also known as the principle of recovery. It represents the time in which the body rests after exercise.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Principle of Individuality - Every person responds to exercise in their own unique way. While most people gain health benefits, such as reduced blood pressure, some individuals may not.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Principle of Reversibility - This is the “use it or lose it” idea. A small lapse from exercise may cause a small reverse of health gains, but a complete return to a sedentary lifestyle, can reverse all health gains.

Exercise and Health-Related Fitness Principle of overuse - Overuse represents an excessive amount of exercise that may cause unwanted health effects. It may be a problem in the beginning stages of an exercise program if a person becomes overenthusiastic and exceeds their capacity. For example you may run too far and develop shin splints.
