Kwinana was Alcoa’s first Australian refinery - commissioned in 1963 World’s first alumina refinery to receive ISO:14001 accreditation Employs around 950 people – 54% live locally Produces both smelter grade and non-metallurgic (chemical) alumina Technology Delivery Group (TDG) – Alcoa’s global refining research and development team

Kwinana Refinery’s History – Key Milestones 6 July 1961Alcoa is granted its bauxite lease by Western Australian Government Dec 1961Construction began at the Kwinana Alumina Refinery July 1963Official opening of the Kwinana Alumina Refinery 18 July 1963The first train carrying bauxite from Jarrahdale mine arrived at Kwinana refinery. Feb 1964Kwinana began to load the MV Lake Sorrel with the first batches of alumina. 1973The original one-unit expanded to a six-unit operation. 1980sAs well as making smelter grade alumina, Kwinana began to manufacture hydrated alumina. 2013 Kwinana’s 50th Anniversary Alcoa Kwinana reached a production milestone of 75 million tonnes
