1 When BABY can’t stop CRYING What You Need to Know about Infant Crying and Shaken Baby Syndrome

2 Everyone needs to know to never shake a baby. Including: relatives: brothers, sisters, aunt, uncles, cousins, etc. babysitters future parents many professionals, like police officers, social workers, doctors and nurses

3 Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) SBS = serious injuries that can result if a baby is violently shaken. Even a few seconds of shaking can cause a lifetime of harm. Shaking can cause a baby to die. Shaking a baby is child abuse. Shaking a baby is a criminal act.

4 Who Would Shake a Baby? Anyone, but some people are more at risk: parents and other caregivers late teens and early 20s males people with other risk factors – drug and alcohol use, mental illness, lack of self- control, inexperience with babies, high stress

6 Anyone who will care for a baby needs to know how to deal with infant crying. Sleeping problems, toileting mistakes and disobedience have all been given as reasons for shaking a baby, but... the most common reason given for shaking is being frustrated with  a crying baby.

7 All Babies Cry Babies cry for many reasons. Crying starts to increase at about 2 weeks of age, peaks around 6 weeks and then gradually decreases. ALL babies have times when they CANNOT stop crying.

9 Soothing a Baby Feed baby slowly and burp baby often. Make baby as comfortable as possible, e.g., check temperature and diaper. Provide gentle motion or relaxing sound. Is baby hungry? Thirsty? Bored? Anxious? Sleepy? Understand that all babies have times when they cannot stop crying.

12 It is More Important to Stay Calm than to Stop the Crying Put the baby in a safe place. Shut the door. Leave for up to 15 minutes. If you are calm, try again to soothe the baby. If you are not calm, seek help. Call someone. Take a break, don’t shake

14 Make a Plan to soothe the baby to calm yourself for who you can call for help

15 Remember... All babies cry. Try different ways to soothe a baby. It is more important to stay calm than to stop the crying. Know ahead of time who you can call for help. Never shake a baby for any reason. Take a break, don’t shake
