3 3 Historical Context NCLB requires jurisdictions receiving Title I funds to participate in NAEP mathematics and reading at grades 4 and 8 Puerto Rico participated in NAEP mathematics in 2003 and 2005 U.S. Department of Education excused Puerto Rico from NAEP reading

4 4 NAEP Mathematics Assessment in Puerto Rico Administered in Spanish for first time in 2003, and again in 2005 Public school students in grades 4 and 8 Samples at each grade –Approximately 100 schools –Approximately 3,000 students

5 5 Students in Puerto Rico Estimated 73 percent enrolled in public schools: – 100 percent of students are classified as Hispanic – 10 percent of eighth-grade students reported coming from non-Spanish-speaking households – 99 percent of students are eligible for the National School Lunch Program

6 6 Comparing Results Results for Puerto Rico are compared to –all public school students in the nation –low-income students in the nation Because of modifications made for 2005, Puerto Rico results for 2003 and 2005 are not comparable
