Integumentary System Introduction to Health Science Mrs. J. Hanna, RN

WOW Facts Skin is the body’s heaviest single part, or organ, with a weight of 24 pounds.

It’s the SKIN! Referred to as a system because it has organs and other parts that work together to perform a particular function.

Three main layers of Tissue 1. Epidermis Outer most layer of skin 2. Dermis True skin Pattern of ridges is unique to each individual, fingerprints and footprints are used as ID.

Third layer of Tissue 3. Subcutaneous or hypodermis Innermost layer

Two types of glands 1. Sudoriferous glands Sweat glands 2. Sebaceous glands Oil glands

Two Other Parts A) 1. Hair Consists of root (grows in hollow tube called the follicle) 2. Shaft *Hair helps protect the body and cover body surfaces except palms and soles of feet.

Other Part B) Nails Protect the fingers and toes from injury. Lost? A nail? Will re-grow if nail bed is not damaged.

What is Alopecia? Alopecia is: BALDNESS Permanent loss of scalp hair

Functions of the Integumentary 1. Protection Serves as a barrier to sun’s ultraviolet rays and to the invasion of pathogens. Holds moisture in Prevents deeper tissues from drying out.

Functions 2. Sensory Perception Nerves in the skin help body respond to pain, pressure, temperature (heat and cold) and touch sensations.

Functions 3. Body Temperature (T.) regulation Blood vessels in skin help body retain (keep) or lose heat. Blood vessels dilate (get larger), excess heat can escape through skin. Blood vessels constrict (get smaller), heat is retained in skin.

Functions 4. Storage Temporary storage of fat, glucose (sugar), water, vitamins, and salts. Adipose tissue in the subcutaneous fascia is a source of energy.

Functions 5. Absorption Certain substances can be absorbed through skin, such as motion sickness or heart disease medications. Called transdermal medications.

Functions 6. Excretion Skin helps eliminate (get rid of) salt, a minute amt. of waste, and excess water and heat through perspiration.

Functions 7. Production Skin helps production of Vitamin D By using ultraviolet rays from sun

Exit Slip Will be a question about the Integumentary System.
