Do-Now! Think of someone whom you believe is successful at goal setting… Discuss with a partner WHY you believe that person is successful…

Goal Setting FRESHMEN HEALTH Mrs. Clark

Setting SMART goals S- Specific M- Measurable A- Achievable R- Realistic T- Timely

Specific Clearly define exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you are going to achieve it! WHAT are you going to do? Use action words such as direct, organize, coordinate, lead, develop, plan, build etc. WHY is this important to do at this? What do you want to ultimately accomplish? HOW are you going to do it? (By...)

Measurable “If you can’t measure it…you can’t manage it.” Establish a criteria which allows you to evaluate whether you have achieved your goal or not. Example: Get accepted to a quality secondary institution by completing 3 college applications by next Saturday.

Achievable The goal should require commitment, but not be out of your reach. “Read 250 pages during my 40 minute study hall.” Is this attainable??? Re-write this goal!

Realistic Goals should be do-able If your goals are too difficult, you could set the stage for failure If your goals are too low, you send the message that you aren't very capable Set the bar high enough for a satisfying achievement!

Timely Set a timetable for the goal Hour? Period? Week? Month? Marking Period? Season? Year? Putting an end point on your goal gives you a clear target to work towards

Short & Long Term Goals Short-term goals: Goals that you would achieve in the near future (day, week, month) Long-term goals: Goals that you would achieve over a longer period of time (marking period, year, 5 years, 20 years)

Set your goals! Make a list of goals Include anything you aspire to achieve both long and short term List as many goals as you can think of in the next 3 minutes!

Categorize your goals Put a circle around any goals that are short term Put a square box around any goals that are long term Move your goals into categories based on the intended outcome (Grades & Classroom Behavior= School-based goals)

Importance of Goal Setting… In 1979 Harvard Business School students were asked, "Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?" Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans; 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing; and a whopping 84 percent had no specific goals at all. Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again…. The 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. And what about the three percent who had clear, written goals? They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together!!!!
