4 Why Male Involvement There is now some level of evidence that MI leads to  Increased couple communication on sexuality and contraception  Increased ANC attendance  Acceptance and adherence to treatment  Increased facility based delivery  Appropriate infant feeding  Reduced infant mortality  Amongst other positive infant and maternal outcomes

7 Male Engagement Strategies Use of invitation letter from local Government authorities Training of health workers-Male friendly health facilities Use of Male champions; positive deviance Involvement of local leaders; cluster change champions Door to door HTC and outreach programs Community health workers approach; Identification of pregnant and their partners (use of Mhealth); discussion with male partners Prioritization for service provision for those accompanied by partners Integrated model of development that act as setting for mobilising men

9 Lessons Learnt and Challenges Lessons Learnt MI go beyond male partners of the pregnant women to include community leaders For sustained BC cycle it is important to maintain zero stock outs of HIV supplies Challenges Hard to reach men; men in army in Rwanda; men away from home for fishing in Sauri Kenya Special groups; women with no long term partners; Sex workers in Mayange Rwanda Health workers capacity to provide comprehensive SRH services Stock out of essential supplies and hence breaking the behaviour change cycle- HTK in Tanzania

10 Next steps  Scale up working MI practices in other countries  Document impact of MI on other PMTCT outcome areas such increase in FP, improved EID, and general retention in the PMTCT cascade. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING
