3  What do you hear when I say “feedback”?  List any words that come to mind.  In pairs, share:  Beliefs about getting feedback from others  Beliefs about giving feedback to others Your Reactions to Feedback

4 Qualities of Good Feedback 1). Accurate – Avoid exaggerations or omissions 2). Specific – Give details. Avoid generalizations: “always” “never” 3). Direct 4). Current – As close to in the moment as possible. 5). Vision-based – What do you want for the person? 6). Growth mindset oriented

5 Situation #1 You have someone on your team who is a star player, but always late to practice. What’s the vision for them? What’s the vision for the team? How would you give them feedback? Practice!

6 Situation #2 PRETEND YOU ARE A COLLEGE STUDENT Someone in your math study group isn’t showing up routinely and doesn’t have any practice work completed or any notes when they arrive. What’s the vision for them? What’s the vision for math study group? How would you give them feedback? Practice!

7 Situation #3 PRETEND YOU ARE GIVING A PARTNER SPEECH IN COLLEGE ENGLISH CLASS. You are the only person doing anything to prepare. Your partner is not preparing for speech What’s the vision for your partner? What’s the vision for the speech? What’s your vision for this class? And giving speeches? How would you give them feedback? Practice!

8 Situation #4 Someone is gossiping and spreading rumors in your friend group What’s the vision for them? What’s the vision for your group of friends? How would you give them feedback? Practice!

15 Steps for taking in feedback 1.Assume good will on the part of the speaker 2.Listen to what they say 3.Take 5 deep breaths 4.Notice what feelings and reactions are coming up 5.Practice some of our self soothing techniques 6.Acknowledge what’s true 7.Ask clarifying questions 8.Use the CAVE process with yourself to make a plan of improvement.
