Specific traits of globalization in culture

Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations. This process has effects on the environment, culture, political systems and human physical well-being in societies around the world. Globalization is not new. For thousands of years, people have been buying from and selling to each other in lands at great distances.

But policy and technological developments of the past few decades have increased cross-border trade, investment, and migration the world. Globalization is deeply controversial. Proponents of globalization argue that it allows poor countries and their citizens to develop economically and raise their standards of living. Opponents of globalization claim that the creation of an international free market has benefited multinational corporations in the Western world at the expense of local enterprises, local cultures, and common people.

GLOBALIZATION IN TURN LARGELY AFFECTS THE CULTURE. Culture is the socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects and behaviour. It is what people eat, how they dress, beliefs they hold and activities they engage in. Globalization has affected cultures in two ways: Firstly, it has tried to homogenize the cultures. On the other hand, globalization has helped to develop local culture. This we can observe in the revival of traditional cultures and reforming of the identity.

Balancing the benefits of integrating into a globalized world against protecting the uniqueness of local culture requires a careful approach. Recognition and respect for the diversity of cultures also creates the conditions for mutual understanding, dialogue and peace.

The current era of globalization, with its acceleration and intensification in the global flows of capital, labour, and information, is having a homogenizing influence on local culture. This phenomenon promotes the integration of societies. But it may also bring with it a loss of uniqueness of local culture, which in turn can lead to loss of identity, exclusion and even conflict.

Globalization also has long-term challenges for culture. False and demeaning ideas can spread, sometimes more speedy than truths. Because widespread skepticism now exists about universal and timeless truths, cultural freedom can be abused.

In spreading cultural globalization, technology has played a crucial role. Technology, in reality, has shrunk the world in our palm. Revolutions in electronic communication (such as radio, TV, cinema, telephone, mobile, fax, Internet, etc.) and rapid means of transportation have produced an impact on local, regional and national cultures. As a result, the world is slowly and slowly becoming as one place. Both the media and geographical mobility feed this perception.

Western mass media often does more harm than good. The degradation of human sexuality; the confusion between "having" and "being“ and an inflated sense of our rights along—these are just a few of the cultural manifestations of Western society. They can do real harm to the culture of a developing country once it gets plugged into the global information economy.

But these cultural problems go along with positive opportunities: an invitation for religious communities to do what they do best. One of the great resources that Christianity brings to the mission of ensuring that globalization serves the human person is its universality. “The Gospel is for all". We are well situated to extend its message throughout the entire world. The challenge now is to use the opportunities that globalization affords for a new evangelization. It will transform the global culture for the better.

The world that we live in today is a result of several cultures coming together. Societies have become larger as they have welcomed people of other civilizations and backgrounds and created a whole new culture of their own. Cooking styles, languages, and customs have spread all due to globalization. The same can be said about movies, musical styles, and other art forms.

The pros of globalization in culture are: globalizations of communications sees a lot of information shared around the world; the best of cultures can be shared and understood on a global scale; there is more influx of information between two countries, which do not have anything in common between them; there is cultural mix and each is trying to know about the other’s cultural preferences and in the process of doing so, we are actually coming across things that we like and in the course of time adopt it.

The cons of globalization in culture are: a small number of private media companies decided what information is to be shared and shape public opinion through bias; media and entertainment impact is westernizing other cultures; there are some experts who think that globalization along with the positive aspects is also leading to the incursion of negatives like communicable diseases and social degeneration.

In the whole globalization is a complex process which has pros and cons. But it is rather positive moment for culture in our life. Thank you for attention!
