Education Phase 2 Food Prices

Not all food costs the same. Which of these foods costs the most?

Why do you think some food cost more than others?

Seasonality Seasonal food is the time of year when food is at its best, in terms of flavour or harvest. If local, seasonal food is available, it is cheaper as there is less travel/storage from farm to fork.

If foods are not in season, they can be imported from different countries with a climate which supports growth of that food at that time of year. However this requires more travel/storage from farm to fork and is more expensive.

Fuel prices Fuels are used in farming processes and also in the transport of food. If fuel prices increase then this can cause food prices to increase.

Fresh or frozen/canned Fresh fruit and vegetables can be cheaper if it is in season. When it is not in season, it is often cheaper to buy frozen or canned foods. This is because the fruit and vegetables can be picked when in season and preserved (frozen/canned), making them available all year round.

Unusual ingredients Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. This is because it grows in a specific area, is labour intensive to harvest and many flowers are needed to produce a small amount. Strands of a type of spice called saffron

Availability Sometimes drought, flooding or fires occur. This can destroy a harvest, resulting in less food available for people and livestock.

In some countries, there are financial crisis (e.g. recession) which can result in food prices increasing. Financial crisis
