2 Prerequisites: One year of high school Chemistry or CHem 1405/1406 Course objective: 4-credits 3 lecture and 3 lab Science and engineering majors study atomic structure, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, electronic configuration, chemical bonding, molecular structure, gases, states of matter, and properties of solutions. Core Curriculum course. Class Organization: One day of the meeting time is lecture and the other is laboratory, as per need. 3hr class with a break of 15min inbetween. Textbook: Chemistry by Raymond Chang The McGraw-Hill Company, 10th ed. 2009. (Required) We’ll cover chapters1-12 and 18 this semester. Lab Manual: for Chemistry 1411 by G.Pahlavan, Y Bai & W. Askew (required).

3 Study Guide by Wendy Gloffke for “An introduction to General Chemistry.” Student Solution Manual by Mark D. Dadmum, 2006, WH Freeman & Co. 4 Course Organization Tests:3 (15% each) AND 1 Final Comprehensive Exam(25%) Test will be in multiple choice format. Assignments: 15% - will decide how many and ? Laboratory:15%- Preparing for lab by reading the exercise and answering questions in prelab. Work on the experiment and submit the lab book at the end of the class.

5 Lab Work and general rules of classroom Length of lab depended on the material. Lab at the end of each class. Have the manual and bring to class. Record your observations, draw brief sketches of slides showing your observations clearly and labeling them neatly. Pencil for sketches and pen for writing. Clean up before leaving room. If group work, then work together but submit reports individually. If there is a question bank in the manual, write the answers clearly and concisely and submit. Assignments and lab reports due at the next meeting. Points taken off for late submission. Miss test or assignment or lab work, no make up unless sickness or death in immediate family. If you need additional tutorial, we’ll set up a time after class. No eating or drinking in the lab. Turn off all phones, i-whats, tablets. Usage of computers is a privelege ONLY for following/monitoring the course. Misuse the privelege and you are back to pencils and paper! Cleanliness, punctuality and promptness appreciated.
