Lesson #6: A Life Reborn ISN page 75

The Afterlife Egyptians had a positive view of life after death. They believed that life in the next world would be better than life on Earth. Osiris would meet newcomers at the entrance to the next world. If they led good lives, Osiris would grant them life after death.

Mummies For the spirit to journey to the afterlife it needed a body. If the body was decayed, the spirit would be forced to wander forever. To protect the body Egyptians developed a process called embalming. The wrapped body is known as a mummy.

Mummies cont. Once a body was preserved it was ready for burial. Egyptians built mountain-like pyramids to protect the bodies of dead pharaohs from floods, wild animals, and grave robbers. Nobles and government officials were buried in brick tombs near the pharaohs they served. The poor were buried in the sand. Grave goods (personal possessions, supplies to smooth the dead’s journey into the afterlife and offerings to the gods) were buried with the dead.
