Ladybridge High School. 14 -19 Curriculum Event and Options Evening April 14 th 2016.

Years 10 and 11 at Ladybridge. So what is so important?  14 – 19 phase provides the basis for the rest of your life.  Skills learnt, developed and acquired will empower you for life.  The qualifications gained will open doors to wherever you plan to go.  Needs to be the right choice for you!

Years 10 and 11 at Ladybridge Statutory (compulsory) Core Curriculum Mathematics, English, Science, PSHCE, PE. (Plus the offer of Computing). Equivalent of 3 days per week.

Core Curriculum  English Language GCSE.  English Literature GCSE.  Maths GCSE.  Science. Combined Science = 2GCSEs. Biology, Physics and Chemistry = 3GCSEs.  PE (not examined).  Between 5 and 6 GCSE equivalents.

Entitlement Curriculum  Students must follow a broad and balanced programme of study at a level commensurate with their age & ability leading to the award of GCSEs or equivalent BTEC qualifications at level 1 or 2.  Students must have the opportunity to study a mixture courses according to their preference. They are entitled to study a course in each of the following areas of the curriculum – Humanities, Arts, MFL and Technology should they so wish.  All students must have the chance to achieve between 8 and 10 GCSEs or equivalent qualifications including English (Lang and Lit), Maths, Science (double or triple), and 4 further options.

The English Baccalaureate (Ebacc)  Not a qualification in itself.  Recognises achievement across a core of academic subjects at GCSE.  A*-C grades in English Language, Mathematics, two Science subjects, a Modern Language (Spanish) and a Humanities subject (History or Geography).  Ebacc students will therefore need to choose Spanish and either History or Geography as two of their four options.

The English Baccalaureate  Students in 9SJS, 9BGE, 9DSS AND 9CMN are advised to CONSIDER the Ebacc pathway.  Students in other Learnacy groups can choose to study for the Ebacc if they so wish.  Current Government thinking is that by 2020 90% of GCSE students nationally should be studying for the Ebacc.

Option Subjects 4 Options Choose your subjects that will occupy the equivalent of two days of study. Your choice! Note you must choose one of the subjects from the top box on the Options Form. These subjects carry high academic value. So from the top box you must tick one subject from Spanish, Geography or History.

Completing the Options Form  Complete the form showing (i) Your choice from the top “Academic” box. (ii) Your four choices from the bottom box. These choices must be numbered 1,2,3 and 4 in order of preference. 1 being your first choice and 4 being your fourth choice.  Your 4 th choice in the bottom box is, in effect, a reserve choice. This reserve choice will only be used if a course is not viable due to insufficient numbers or if a clash occurs between your other options.

Completing the Options Form 2  REMEMBER to qualify for the EBacc students must choose Spanish AND either History or Geography  REMEMBER you cannot choose any subject that you dropped at the end of Year 8.  Students in 9VLI will receive extra guidance and support from Mr Hnatiw and students in 9FAA will receive the same from Mrs Brooks-Doogan.
