3 3 What is community? What communities do you belong to? Identify some community groups you are aware of? In groups answer the following

4 What is Community? continued 4 Many of us identify as part of more than one community and it may be that a community is simply a collection of relationships Geographic communities or localities Non- geographic communities e.g. older people, gay community, indigenous people etc Users of services e.g. Mental health consumer groups, parents of children with special needs The general public It is important to note that people define for themselves which communities they feel part of

5 What is Community? continued 5 In other words a community may be a specific geographical neighbourhood, a particular population group, a particular organisation or a range of stakeholders affected by a planned program or initiative or specific community issues There is often a romanticised notion of a community as an ideal and harmonious unit. Communities must also been seen as diverse and characterised by degrees of difference and naturally occurring conflict

7 Community Development 7 In groups discuss the following and present your discussion outcomes to the class 2. List some of the values and philosophies which underpin community services. 3.Write a brief outline as to why these values would also be important in Community Development. 4. Provide two examples of where these values would be demonstrated in Community Development work. 1. Define in your own words what you believe community development is

8 Community Development 8 Community Development is action that helps communities of people to recognise and develop their ability and potential and organise themselves to respond to problems and needs that they share

9 Values and Philosophies of Community Services 9 Least restrictive alternative- *means a setting, a program, or a course of action that puts as few limits as possible on a person’s rights and individual freedoms while, at the same time, meeting the person’s care and support needs. Valued/Respected roles and boundaries Empowerment, involvement in decision-making. 12 Summary of session Defined ‘community’ and ‘community Development’ Explored the values and philosophies of community services work and compared them to community development. Developed questions for the guest speaker next week. 12
