Waves that DO NOT require a medium to travel
Can travel through a vacuum – empty space
Waves that carry all types of light energy
Creates the electromagnetic spectrum
This is how we are able to get light and energy from the sun

Every type of light wave arrange by the frequency of each wave
Lowest frequency to highest frequency
Lowest amount of energy to highest amount of energy
Include: Radio, Microwave, infrared, visible light, Ultraviolet, X-ray, Gamma

3. Electromagnetic Spectrum
We get all sorts of our technology from the electromagnetic spectrum:
Radio waves – Radio, TV, Satellites, radar, computer networks – lowest frequency – lowest amount of energy
Microwaves – microwave ovens, cellphones, radars used to predict weather

4. Electromagnetic Spectrum
Infrared – Remote controls, devices that detect heat
Visible Light – only part we are able to see. Gives us vision and colors; Rainbows
Ultraviolet Light – bug zappers, killing bacteria, black lights

5. Electromagnetic Spectrum
X-Rays – used to see through skin, clothing, and other materials
Gamma Rays – given off by stars; used to kill cancer, sterilize food and medical equipment, and used to make bombs; highest frequency so it has the highest amount of energy
